Everyone deserves a second chance – at least that’s what the United States Department of Labor believes. It offers tax breaks to businesses that give a second chance to those recently released from prison. They do this via the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program.
Many times, returning citizens find it difficult gaining employment due to their past convictions. This arrangement is a win-win for everyone. The business reduces its overall tax liability and the employee gains valuable work experience.
About the Program
How the Program Works
How the Credit is Calculated
Qualified wages paid to the employee during the first year of employment form basis of the tax credit. There is a cap of $6,000 on wages that can be used for the credit calculation. For employees working at least 120 hours but fewer than 400 for the first year, the credit is 25 percent of qualified wages. For those working over 400 hours the credit is 40 percent of wages. The wage cap is slightly higher for those employing disabled veterans and welfare recipients.
An employer hiring ex-felon can potentially receive a $2,400 tax credit for the year.
Finding the right job with a past conviction or a disability can be very challenging. At Gateway Staffing Agency we find the employer tailored for you. We will leverage our experience, our network, and take the pressure off of you when searching for employment.
A GSA Recruiter will conduct a personal one on one interview with you to gain a clear understanding of your career goals, your skills, experience, and the types of positions you’re seeking.
After the interview process you’ll participate in a number of assessments to determine your skill level. A GSA Recruiter will verify your background and work history by contacting at least three of your professional references. Once your background and reference check is complete, GSA will begin targeting positions that match your personal profile and requirements.
Gateway Staffing Agency specializes in offering temporary and permanent employment for returning citizens and veterans. At Gateway Staffing Agency we partner with Non Profit Agencies to assure that each individual that we assist with employment goes through the proper rehabilitation services and training to fulfill the requirements of the employer.
Statistics show that thousands of veterans and returning citizens are re-entering society every year without adequate employment and resources. Upon re-entry, veterans and returning citizens find it difficult to adapt to society and to financially support themselves and their families. Additionally, many employers hesitate to hire anyone with an unfavorable history or a disability. This population often suffers in silence and lacks adequate resources. Gateway Staffing Agency bridges this gap.
The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states that the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly male, single, live in urban areas, and suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. About 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans. About 1.4 million other veterans, meanwhile, are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in over-crowded or substandard housing.
Each year, more than 750,000 offenders are released from prison throughout the country. Because they are unable to find stable employment, adequate healthcare, and possess poor employment histories, these individuals subsequently return to their former lifestyles. About two-thirds of offenders are re-arrested within three years of release, and half return to prison during that same time, (Bureau of Justice 2010).
Gateway Staffing Agency has had great success offering employment to veterans and returning citizens and remains a solid source to this population.
